Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 25 John Cotton Smith was born in Sharon February 12, 1765. After graduation from Yale College in 1783, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1786. He held many political Offices and in 1809 became a superior court judge. In 1811 he was elected Lieutenant Governor and upon the death of Roger Griswold in 1812, became Acting Governor. The next year he was elected Governor which office he held through 1817. Retiring from public life, he spent his declining years in Sharon. He was much interested in the formation of this Society and until his death in 1845, was instrumental in adding to the Society's library.
