The study was guided by 3 research questions: (a) What are primary grade teachers' perceptions of best instructional practices to support the development of students' writing skills? (b) What are primary grade teachers' perceptions about their own writing practices? (c) What are primary grade teachers' perceptions regarding the use of a process and/or a skills-based approach to the teaching of writing? The study was conducted in a suburban, southeastern Pennsylvania school district. Twenty-nine kindergarten through third grade teachers completed an online survey that included fixed choice questions. Seven elementary educators participated in follow-up interviews. The findings from this research revealed the participants perceived themselves as writers' but, at the same time recognized that there was more to learn about writing instruction than what their own experiences had been. Additionally, the results indicated that, despite participants recognizing the value of instructional practice that incorporates both skills-based and process writing, there is a complexity to writing instruction and many factors play a role in writing instruction.
