Book excerpt: The current study examined predictors of mental health health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with prostate cancer who have undergone robotic radical prostatectomy. Data were obtained from an existing database and additional chart review. The final sample size was 168 patients. In addition, unique measures of psychological functioning were examined: use of psychotropic medication, referral to psychology/psychiatry services, and distress in physician clinic notes (distress composite), and psychiatric history. Two sets of regression models were compared at each time point (baseline, six weeks, six months, one year, and one and a half years post-surgery) using concurrent and previous visit predictors of mental health HRQoL to determine risk factors. The most common predictors across time points and models were the psychiatric history and distress composites. Surprisingly, the only prostate cancer-specific variable to predict mental health was urinary bother, at baseline. Implications for future research and clinical practice will be discussed.
