Book excerpt: Every year, the New Jersey Department of Labor and the American Legion select and recognize two private New Jersey firms to receive "Employer of the Year" awards. The winners come from two groups: large companies with more than 200 employees and smaller companies with fewer than 200 employees. To win, the companies must have an outstanding performance of hiring the disabled worker. This performance is measured by percentages of disabled workers, retention programs for disabled workers and special programs which serve disabled workers. 1983's winners were (Large Firm: Union Photo Company, represented by company President, Robert Rachevski and Celotex of Perth Amboy (Small Firm: represented by manager Jack Susser). At its peak, Celotex and its parent company, Jim Walter Corporation was the nation's largest building materials manufacturer and produced such products as insulation, wallboard, roofing shingles and many other products for both commercial and residential use.
