Book excerpt: Introduced by Chris Daggett, Governor Kean speaks at the 15th anniversary celebration of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Governor Kean tells his audience about John Muir, the first president of the Sierra Club and a pioneer considered to be the Father of the then modern environmental movement. The Governor goes on to mention President Theodore Roosevelt, Giffor Pinchot, George Perkins Marsh, John Rushkin, Joseph Wood Krutch, Henry Beston as men who carried on Muir's legacy. Kean declared that envirionmentalism or conservationism was only a mere fringe movment until the1962 publication of a then rather obscure biologist and author, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. This small book alerted American's to the dangers in pesticides and to pollution in general. It was President Nixon who recommended the creation of a "strong, independent agency" to run the legion of environmental programs that were then springing up. Governor Kean also told his audience that the EPA was born with high expectations as it was viewed at a frontline in the war on pollution.
