Book excerpt: Governor Kean tells his audience that New Jersey was then the second 'grayest' state in the nation, with the elderly the then fastest growing segment of the state's population. He states further that by the year 2,000, one out of every four people in the U.S. will be over 65. Kean was the the keynote speaker for the first annual conference sponsored by the Center for Geriatric Care at Morristown Memorial Hospital, The conference brings together medical professionals, business and government leaders and academic experts for solutions to the intersection of the growing elderly population with rising health care costs. Kean mentions Colorado Governor Richard Lamm's radical speech that the gravely ill elderly have a 'duty to die.' As the Chairman of the National Governors' Association's Committee on Human Resources, Kean set up an advisory committee on controling health care costs, which in essence advises on capital expenditures for health care facilities. Kean promotes prevention as a solution to this issue of rising health care costs.
