The Pyrenees, besides isolating Spain from the rest of the continent, continue far to the west under other names, leaving a strip of coast on the north watered by several short rivers. This is a rainy district with rich pastures, backed by mountain slopes which supply much timber, and being difficult of access is well suited to be the last refuge of national independence.
