After his father's death in March 1828, James and his mother left Canada. By 1841 they had settled in Savannah, Georgia. In 1843 they moved to South Carolina. He married Mary Catherine (Kitty) Weir (b. 1829) in 1851. They lived in South Carolina where he died Dec. 12, 1886.
