Enhanced sensory devices also present new and challenging research problems, which are intrinsically related to the resource constrained sensor nodes overwhelmed by excessive multimedia data. On one hand, the in-network data compression and replication subsystem effectively harnesses these powerful sensing devices by utilizing various compression techniques. On the other hand, it also maximizes the data storage energy efficiency by jointly tuning the allocation of energy resources between nodal computation and communication. The thesis specifically focuses on proposing such a generic and synthesized management system. Firstly, we develop problem models for each of the subsystems along with in-depth analyses on them (e.g. problems tractability). We then propose a series of novel and efficient algorithms for tackling each of these challenging problems. Finally, we develop several simulators to evaluate their performances under different experimental settings. The anticipated outcomes of this thesis could lead to a targeted management system for WSNs.
