Book excerpt: The Korean church through many decades experienced tremendous growth in numbers, with the church in 1995 attracting over twenty percent of the population. However, the Korean church is currently facing new twenty-first century problems, suffering serious stagnation, and experiencing decline. The church urgently needs to reflect on the current situation and to develop new principles and remedial strategies. The research examines the characteristics of the Korean postmodern context relating to the structure in order to develop a relevant missional structure for the church, and to help church and mission leaders of the Presbyterian Churches in Korea obtain new missiological insights. The study explores three fields: modern cultures in mission history, new challenges in mission today, and growing churches in the postmodern cultures and the Korean context. These explorations answer which missional structures of the Presbyterian church in Korea have been developed, which patterns of organizational structure have been effective, what are the characteristics of the postmodern context that affect the organizational structure of the church, and what are the elements necessary for missional engagement as seen from the perspective of the missional structure in the postmodern context. First, I trace the early period of the Korean church so that the present situation might be better understood, and then I identify growing churches in the modern Korea. An analysis of the church growth in modern Korea is also included. In the next part, I review the phenomena of postmodern society, and I attempt to establish some tentative principles for analyzing the postmodern culture: defining postmodern terms, summarizing the characteristics of postmodernity, and outlining the new challenges in mission, such as globalization, secularization, and pluralization. In the third and last part, I define evangelization and church growth, and identify growing churches in postmodern cultures. I analyze six Korean urban churches, and I note some of the missional features of these six churches as "emerging churches," which are defined as the growing churches without the modern practices of Christianity, not the faith itself. Emerging churches are extended in the application of various practices in diverse postmodern cultures..
