Book excerpt: The Engineer Research and Development Center, Environmental Laboratory, has created a Wetlands Restoration Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) based on Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. SDSS will be used to identify and prioritize potential wetland restoration areas along the Mississippi Gulf Coast as part of the non-structural solutions planned for that area following Hurricane Katrina. Advantages of the SDSS approach include relatively rapid identification and assessment of a large number of restoration sites across a wide area. Potential sites can also be evaluated and restored in a watershed or landscape context, maximizing the benefits of wetland restoration.
