Book excerpt: It has recently been demonstrated by Bollmann (1,2), Hirsch, Home, and Whelan (3), and Whelan, Hirsch, Home, and Bollmann (4) that dislocation lines can be observed in thinned metal foils by transmission electron microscopy. This work was confined to foils of aluminum and austenitic stainless steel, and the observations were made in microscopes operating at 80 to 100 kv. Since it is apparent that the technique might provide a new approach to the investigation of a wide variety of metallurgical phenomena, particularly those involving dislocation mechanisms, a survey has been carried out in the Mines Branch Laboratory to determine what features of interest could be observed in metal foils using a RCA EMU-2C electron microscope operating at 50 kv. Observations have been made on foils of five metals. The thinning technique and some results of the investigations are reported in this paper.
