Book excerpt: The basic essential missions assigned by II Field Force, Vietnam, are: protection of Saigon, protection of main routes of communication with the Division TAOI, and the defeat of enemy plans. In addition, the Division has assumed important missions associated with the Accelerated Pacification Campaign which commenced on 1 Nov 68 and is scheduled for completion 17 Feb 1969. This campaign is described in detail in other portions of this report. The operational trends of the period, based on command guidance, experience factors, and the changing tactical environment, have undergone a slight adjustment since the close of the previous period. The current trends are: Night operations, maintain contact, small unit operations, pile-on tactics, thorough search, and B-52 exploitation.
