Book excerpt: This study explores the intricate relationship between literacy and socio-economic development, analysing literacy rates and their impact on economic growth, health outcomes, gender equality, and social cohesion. Drawing on data from the World Population Review, CIA World Factbook, World Bank, and Our World in Data, we examine literacy rates for 2024 and compare them with Human Development Index (HDI) scores from 2019-2021 to identify patterns and correlations. The findings indicate that global literacy rates vary widely, from 27% in Chad to 100% in several countries, with an average literacy rate of 83.41%. Notable gender disparities persist, especially in regions like Afghanistan where female literacy is significantly lower than male literacy (22.6% vs. 52.1%). The analysis reveals a positive correlation between higher literacy rates and better socio-economic indicators. For instance, the United States, with a 100% literacy rate, maintains high HDI scores (0.92 to 0.93), whereas countries with lower literacy rates, such as Pakistan (60%), exhibit lower HDI scores. The study underscores the importance of literacy as a catalyst for economic growth, improved health, and gender equality, advocating for targeted interventions to enhance literacy and drive sustainable development globally.
