Book excerpt: A growing body of literature shows bariatric surgery to be the best long-term treatment option for obesity and related diseases. Thorough preparation in the preoperative phase by a multidisciplinary team is considered essential to successful patient outcomes. One element of preparation is the psychological assessment and management of the surgical candidate. The medical literature surrounding preoperative psychological assessment and management of the bariatric surgery patient was examined. Significant gaps in the empirical evidence base were found in the following areas: psychological assessment tools, psychological management, and psychoactive medication management. Closing these evidence gaps are essential to safe, effective care of the bariatric surgery patient. -- from the abstract.
