The Casino Control Commission was created in 1977, just prior to the opening of New Jersey's 1st casino, Resorts International Hotel Casino. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission is the panel charged with licensing (including developing regulations, systems, and controls for) New Jersey's casinos and its key employees. As a quasi-judicial panel, it also handles appeals of decisions of or penalties imposed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. It is comprised of up to three members, appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. Commissioners serve staggered, five-year terms and can only be removed for cause. By law, no more than two commissioners can be of the same political party, a requirement that provides political balance on the panel.
