Book excerpt: The linguistic use of code-switching is defined as the process of shifting from one language or dialect (linguistic code) to another, depending on the social context or conversational setting (such as with Spanglish). Code-switching has brought considerable controversy over time, while students and teachers are among those affected by the outcome. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the opinions of educators on the use of code-switching in the classroom, based on the hypothesis that, teachers believe that student learning will improve in a classroom where code-switching is allowed. Furthermore, the study is designed to outline the psychosocial, and academic benefits of code-switching. A 26-question survey was administered where 121 Utah teacher responses were gathered and analyzed. Specifically, the survey inquired about the use of code-switching in a classroom among students or between students and their teachers. Results found a positive correlation between teachers’ belief that code-switching improves learning and their willingness to allow the use of code-switching in their classrooms.
