Book excerpt: Three important scientific challenges in discharge data assimilation are identified and addressed in this study: 1) developing an appropriate data assimilation scheme that accounts for the time lags between state errors and observational errors; 2) quantifying the model and the observational errors for stochastic data assimilation; and 3) properly addressing errors in multiple sub-catchments in a semi-distributed forecasting system.
