Book excerpt: The Chinese cultural footprint in Indonesia has a long history and has influenced local wisdom in the country. The presence of the Chinese people in Indonesia can be traced back to the 7th century AD, initially as a result of maritime trade between China and Indonesia. Over time, more Chinese people settled in Indonesia, bringing their culture with them. The influence of Chinese culture in Indonesia has also faced challenges and conflicts in the past, such as the events of the 1965 Tragedy that affected the relationship between the Chinese community and Indonesia. Nevertheless, the Chinese cultural imprint in Indonesia remains an integral part of the cultural diversity and national identity of Indonesia.
